Salvia extract, leaves, tincture or spray, the four forms compared

The four forms of salvia Avalon sells, side by side: dried leaves, 5X to 80X extracts, a 2.5:1 tincture and a 13:1 spray, with what each ratio means.

Updated

Avalon Magic Plants sells salvia in four forms: dried leaves, extracts from 5X to 80X, a liquid tincture labelled 2.5:1 and a liquid spray labelled 13:1. Each carries a different kind of strength figure, so the numbers cannot be lined up directly. This page puts them side by side.

Dried leaves

Leaf is the reference every other figure is measured against, and the one form without a strength claim. Published analyses of dried leaf found 1.54 mg of salvinorin A per gram in a US product (Chambers et al., 2022) and 3.2 to 5.0 mg per gram in three Japanese products (Tsujikawa et al., 2008).

Traditionally the fresh leaves were chewed or their juice was drunk, and the effect depends on uptake through the lining of the mouth, because salvinorin A is broken down once swallowed (Siebert, 1994). Avalon's leaf page describes smoking and chewing, and says chewing gives a slower, longer effect.

Extracts, 5X to 80X

The extracts are dried leaf material with a raised salvinorin A content, sold by weight. Avalon states a fold ratio and a milligram content for each; the fold versus standardised page explains both numbers, and the choosing page goes through them one by one. They are meant for smoking, and the amounts per use are small: for its 40X the shop gives 0.02 to 0.05 gram, for its 80X 0.01 to 0.03 gram, for use where salvia is legal.

Smoked salvinorin A peaks within about two minutes, and clear effects were gone after roughly 20 minutes in a laboratory study (Johnson et al., 2011).

The 2.5:1 tincture

The tincture is a liquid in a 10 ml bottle. Its ratio, 2.5:1, reads as 2.5 parts plant to 1 part liquid. Avalon spells it out as "2.5 grams of leaf material per ml". A whole bottle therefore stands for about 25 grams of leaf. The shop gives no milligram content for it.

Per the shop, the tincture is taken as 2 to 10 drops under the tongue, held in the mouth for at least a minute, with effects starting after 10 to 20 minutes and lasting one to two hours. Avalon adds that it is not suitable for beginners and should be used with a sober sitter.

The 13:1 spray

The spray is a 1 ml liquid. Avalon states its strength as 13:1, "1 ml is equal to 13 grams of Salvia leaf", and describes it as sprayed under the tongue, with effects within minutes. The shop's warnings on this product are worth reading in full: not for anyone under 18, not during pregnancy, not for people with a mental illness, and no driving or operating machinery within 24 hours.

How far uptake under the tongue is understood

Both liquids rely on the mouth. The traditional chewing route shows that this works with whole leaf (Siebert, 1994). The one placebo-controlled study of pure salvinorin A under the tongue, with doses up to 4 mg in a laboratory solution, found no effect stronger than placebo and very low blood levels; the authors concluded that uptake by that route was low for their solution (Mendelson et al., 2011). No published study has tested commercial salvia tinctures or sprays. How strongly a liquid acts for a given person is therefore something only a very small first amount can show.

Comparing across forms

The leaf-equivalent figures make a rough comparison possible:

ProductLeaf equivalent per pack
Leaves, 5 g5 g
5X extract, 1 g5 g
10X extract, 1 g10 g
Spray, 1 ml13 g
20X extract, 1 g20 g
Tincture, 10 ml25 g
80X extract, 0.5 g40 g

The routes differ, so equal leaf equivalents do not mean equal effects. Smoking acts within minutes and is over quickly; the liquids work through the mouth, more slowly by the shop's description. Mixing forms in one session makes the total impossible to judge.

The packs

Avalon also sells two bundles. The three-strength pack holds 1 g of 10X, 1 g of 20X and 0.5 g of 30X, with the advice to start with the 10X. The Enjoy Salvia Pack holds 1 g of 20X with a metal pipe and a torch lighter; the shop notes that extract needs more heat than an ordinary lighter gives, and that the pack is intended for experienced users.

Before ordering any of these, check the legal status for where you are: the products are offered for a stay in the Netherlands.
